#002 LP-style

LP-style Goldtop build with three P-90 pickups.

This guitar draws inspiration from the classic LPs of the ’50s. After years of playing my LP Studio as a main guitar, I gained a deep appreciation for its design and feel. Also, from a builder’s perspective, a good example of an overcomplicated set-neck construction. Of course, it can be simplified, but I wanted to follow the traditional way.

The body is built from two pieces of Fijian mahogany with a carved, two-piece maple top. The neck is a thick, highly flamed maple, featuring an ebony fretboard and headstock overlay. The neck joint follows the traditional long tenon construction.

I used a two-way truss rod with a spoke wheel adjustment at the body, reinforced by two carbon fibre rods for added stability.

The fretboard is bound in cream, has mother-of-pearl trapezoid inlays and a 12” radius.

The gold top was perfectly sprayed by Matt at Crimson and then coated with high-gloss nitro. The rest of the instrument is finished with a very thin coat of a semi-satin polyurethane.

The three P-90 pickups are wired to individual volume pots and a master tone control. A Free-Way 3×3 toggle switch unlocks all possible pickup combinations, allowing it to function as a classic two-pickup LP or take advantage of the middle pickup – without the need for push-pull pots or extra mini toggles.

The guitar turned out beautifully – surprisingly lightweight and sounding fantastic. And the neck? Thiiiiiiiiick, just like those early ’50s LPs!
